Notes for RICHARD BLACKWELL:

Married by Fr. Collins (Source:  Marriage Certificate - Fedamore Parish, Limerick, Ireland)

Arrived on the Ship Franklin Pierce, April 6, 1853, together with wife, Bridget, and children, William, Eliza and Bridget.

Died of "paralytic illness."  Buried – New Calvary Cemetery, Dorchester, MA

Notes for BRIDGET BURKETT:

Death Certificate records at Somerville City Clerk's Office indicate her parents to have been Thomas Burkett and Mary Daily (not Thomas Riordan).  However, marriage certificate sent from Fedamore Parish, Diocese of Limerick shows her maiden name as Riordan.  It is possible that she was a widow at the time of this marriage, having been born Daily but whose first husband may have been Riordan.

Surprisingly, she is listed in 1880 U.S. Census for Eureka, Nevada as living in household of son-in-law Junius North and daughter, Eliza.  She had traveled from Massachusetts to California and then to Nevada, where she stayed for several years.  She returned to Massachusetts eventually and is buried with her husband in Dorchester, MA.

The following is from Thompson & West's History of Nevada (Howell-North, Berkeley, CA, 1958, Pg. 352):  "December 25, 1873:  Henry C. Blackwell was killed by Alexander McKeever at Duckwater, Nye County.  McKeever was drunk and had called upon a daughter of Blackwell's, and when requested to leave, killed the old man with an axe.  McKeever was sentenced to ten years in State Prison."

The following is from the Nevada State Library and Archives - from Alexander McKeever's Prison File.  McKeever had been sentenced to 10 years in prison on February 11, 1874 for the manslaughter death of Henry Blackwell at Duckwater, Nevada.  The following Statement was given for the purpose of his application for a pardon, which was granted on February 19, 1880.

     Statement of Alex McKeaver

About three weeks previous to the difficulty at Blackwell's I was hauling grain from my ranch to the house of Mr. John Williams - grain I had sold him.  Mrs. Blackwell asked me if I would bring up some flour for her from Williams' ranch.  Blackwell had sent some flour there for her.  I said I would and did.  On my arriving at her house with the flour, her daughter, named Annie McCormick (daughter by a former husband, Blackwell being her second husband) and Mrs. Blackwell carried in the flour all but one sack, which they asked me to carry in.  When I got in the house the girl Annie asked me if I would not take her to a Ball at Kim [sic.?] Creek.  I refused by saying that I had no money to spend in taking her to a Ball.  I then went out and got into my wagon and started off for home.  The girl also got in my wagon with two children of Mrs. Blackwell's and rode about half a mile.  While in the wagon she kept at me to take her to the Ball.  I still refused when she got mad, got out of the wagon with the children and returned home on foot.

In a day or two after, the girl Annie went to the house of Mrs. North who lived about one mile from Blackwell's and told Mrs. North that I was going to steal or kill some of North's cattle; this she told out of spite because I would not take her to the Ball.  A few days later I saw Mrs. North when she told me what the girl had said which made me mad and I said to Mrs. North, "the damned poor house bastard.  If I was listening to her, I'd slap her face."  Mrs. North said she did not believe her.  Mrs. North was Blackwell's sister and she told Mrs. Blackwell what I had called the girl.

The next time I saw Mrs. Blackwell, she spoke to me about it and I remarked that she was as much a Bastard as I was a thief.  (As to her being a Bastard, I don't know but do know she was taken from a poor house.)  At this time Mr. Blackwell was working in Eureka and he came home the day before Christmas to see them.  When he got home on Christmas Eve, Mrs. Blackwell told him what I had called the girl.

On Christmas Morning I started from the house of Mrs. North to go down the Valley to get a horse for Capt. Shields to go a duck hunting.  On my arrival at Blackwell's on my way for the horse, Mr. Blackwell invited me in to take a drink with him, it being Christmas, and brought out a ----john [sic.] of whiskey.  I set down with him to talk and while we were talking we took several drinks -- I had given him some game chickens about a year previous and after drinking we went out to take a look at the chickens.  After looking at the chickens I got on my horse to leave and go after the horse for Capt. Shields.  Mr. Blackwell took hold of my horse and insisted on my going into the house again and taking another drink before I left.

I got off my horse and went into the house again with him -- Blackwell had some of my cows milking them for his own use and Mrs. Blackwell wanted to buy for her little girl a heifer calf belonging to one of the cows that was a good milker.  I told her I would not sell the calf but would make the child a present of it.  We then took another drink -- Then we commenced talking about a law suit with Isaac Irwin, about water.  By this time we were both full of bad whiskey.  I made an attempt to leave several times but Blackwell would not let me.  I must stay as it was Christmas and drink -- we were all friendly -- Blackwell has on a large blanket overcoat, he got up and took it off and again got the ----john [sic] of whiskey.

I was about leaving again and was in a setting position on my feet talking to one of his little children when Blackwell asked me if I said I would slap Annie McCormick's face, I said Yes and just as I arose he struck me the face between the eyes and knocked me down and kicked me.  I got up on my feet and Mrs. Blackwell had hold of me.  Blackwell then struck me three times and said, "You son of a bitch, you have got no shot gun now to protect yourself with."  I tried to get out, but his wife kept her back to the door and would not let me out.  I took hold of her and pushed her from the door, it was a glass door and I tried to break it to get out as she had the door locked -- she then came with the key and opened the door, and said now you can go.  As I was going out I called Blackwell a son of a bitch and I said if we were alone you would not try to whip me -- I started for my horse.  It was a Colt and hard to mount.  I had hold of my horse and had loosed him from the wheel where he was tied, when I saw Mr. and Mrs. Blackwell comming [sic.] towards me from the house on a run.  I then stooped down and picked up an old axe or hatchet with a stick in it for a handle about (14) fourteen inches long that was laying on the ground where my horse was tied and where they cut wood.  I kept swinging the axe from one side to the other to keep Mrs. Blackwell off as she was ahead.  She closed in.  I did not want to hurt her.  I had either to hurt her or let her get hold of my arm which she did.  She was also full of whiskey at the time.  As Blackwell came towards me he fell when close to me.  I then gave her a push and wrenched the axe from her when she fell, the ground being slippery.  As he was getting up I struck him with the side of the axe and cut him which I thought in the head.

As soon as I saw what I had done, I threw the axe down and stopped the blood on his head, then raised him up and walked him into the house.  The first words he spoke after he got into the house was that hem and I were the best two men in the Valley.  I stayed with him awhile and bound up his head and then went home.  I came back the same evening and set up with him all night.  He said he thought he would be all right in the morning when he got a cup of coffee.  Mrs. Blackwell said she thought so too.  She said it was all whiskey.  I told him I would kill a Beef so he could have some beef to make beef tea.  I killed one of my Beef Cattle and took him a quarter.  Capt. Shields came down to the house.  Mrs. Blackwell said Alex why did you strike him.  I said I did not -- he strike me first.  She said I know he did.  The Mail Carrier was Depty. Sheriff.  He come to my place and said the best thing I could do was to go to Belmont.  Capt. Shields advised me to give myself up.  I went down to Blackwell's house, shaked hands with Blackwell and he got up in the bed and kissed me.  I said it was a bad job.  He said it might be worse.  I gave Mrs. Blackwell all my papers to keep for me.  I then went to Belmont with the Depty and delivered myself up.

I never during my life had any trouble before.  Never was arrested.  Never in a Justice Court.  I came to Nevada ("Gold Hill") in 1862, worked in the Empire Mine between five and six years.  Bob Graves was Supt. a great portion of the time I was attending brakes.  Made a trip to Phila. to see my people.  Was absent but 5 and 6 months.  Came back and went to work again in the mines.  I quit the Mine and bought myself a team and buck and done hauling on my own account.  Lived in Gold Hill about nine years.  Was never idle.  I bought a lot and built me a house the first year.  Was a tax payer during the balance of the time I lived there.  I sold my property in Gold Hill and with my money bought Cattle.  Took them to Duckwater and located a Ranch.  My Cattle would sometimes stray down the Valley.

Mrs. Blackwell and Mrs. North on several occasions told me that a man named Brown was in the habit of running after by Calves on Horseback with a pitchfork and running them in the Creek.  Brown and Mr. Blackwell and North were the biggest kind of enemies.  I remarked to them several times as some of my Calves had been drowned, being mad myself that if I were to catch him at it I would kick his guts out.  Brown and myself never had any words about cattle or anything else.  This was only talk between myself and the women.

As to my drinking liquor I had not taken ten drinks until Christmas day at Blackwell's during the previous four years and a half and not a drink in eighteen months before.

                             Very Respectfully

                             /s/ Alexander McKeever
